Heated Floor Mats for Radiant Heat & Snow Melting

The Romans first invented central heating with their version of underfloor radiant heating called a "hypocaust." First, a slab floor was raised about two feet off the ground supported by a series of tiled pillars. Spaces were also left inside the walls of the building, too. A "praefurnium," or wood-fired furnace, was placed on the outside of the house, below the floor. Hot gases from the praefurnium were naturally drawn through the floors and up and out the walls, radiantly heating the space along the way.

While since then, we've invented more effective methods of heating, the best is still radiant heat, delivered directly and economically to where you need it most. Think about your forced air oil or gas heating system. How much of your home do you really need to heat at once? Wouldn't it be better to direct and concentrate the heat where and when you need it? How much of that heat is wasted in heating empty rooms? Think of the dollar signs floating away!
